Castleton Reduce Reuse Recycle

We are trying to reduce the amount of waste we produce in the village. It’s complicated and keeps changing so these pages will be often updated as we have new ideas and as policy and law changes.

If you live, work or own a business in Castleton, you are welcome to join our Facebook group to share and develop ideas. Click on the image on the left.

REUSE
There are many kinds of reusable coffee cups – but to avoid plastic contamination, stainless steel is best. And why not have your own resusable cake box for take aways. In the UK, we use 3.2 billion single use coffee cups a year and less than 1% are recycled!
There is apparently more plastic in all the bags for life we all have now than the flimsy bags we all used to use. So don’t forget to use your old bags for life in the back of the cupboard. And you can donate excess bags for life in the food bank boxes in supermarkets.

Zero waste shops and refills
There are a few zero waste refill places near us … and many more in Sheffield.
See the links below or click on the logos:-

If there is enough interest maybe Refills on the Road could come to Castleton or Lembas, Sheffield (wholefood wholesalers) could make regular deliveries here – they sell large containers of soap etc so you can do your own refills. Other delivery companies such as Ocado are also piloting selling items in resusable containers

Repair Cafes

There are a number of these nearby where you can get items repaired

RECYCLE
Recycle Now is a good starting point to find out about recycling. Click on the image or the link above.

  • Kerbside: What goes in your recycling bins. High Peak BC website lists what you can and can’t put in the brown and green bins – it’s quite complex and does change. Each local authority does things differently – Derbyshire Dales, Sheffield and Greater Manchester all have different ways of doing things.  From personal experience it’s very confusing for people who have moved!
  • Waterswallows: A very useful link for many items accepted here (though not everything is accepted).
  • Freecycle: nonprofit movement of people who share and reuse items in their local communities.

11 surprising items you can’t donate to charity shops. Donating to charity shops is a great way to pass on preloved items and help raise money – but there are some items you often can’t donate. Follow the link above to find out more.

Library of Things: Borrow not Buy
The nearest library of things is in Buxton – you can borrow things you need for a small fee. We are looking at how we can set one up here.

Buxton Library of Things offers a wide range of useful Things for Members to borrow. We’ve got carpet cleaners, power washers, power tools, gardening equipment, extra glasses and cutlery for when you’re having a party, and much more. “

Future Ideas: Plastic Pollution
Other areas we are looking at to reduce the amount of plastic. Let us know if you are interested in either of these proposals. Click on the images for more information.

By Castleton becoming a plastic free community: Plastic Free Communities is a nationwide people-powered movement dedicated to breaking free from single-use plastic and stopping its production for good.

By having a refill scheme for visitors. From City to Sea is an environmental organisation, campaigning to stop plastic pollution at source. They work with communities, businesses, and everyday activists around the world to provide practical solutions to the plastic problem.

Future Legislation and Changes
Simpler recycling scheme with 4 separate containers for kerbside waste – paper/card, plastic/glass, food/garden and non recyclable – came in for larger businesses in April 2025 and coming in for households from April 2026 and smaller businesses from April 2027.
Soft plastic – kerbside collections from April 2027.
Deposit return scheme  – so we might be putting cans and bottles in our brown bins now but before we know it, we may have to scan them in an app first or take them to a supermarket to get a deposit back. Lots of detail to be worked out but due to come in in October 2027.
